The story
Historical context
Zurmala is the eroded core of a once much more elaborate Buddhist stupa, generally associated with the Kushan-period religious landscape of Termez.
Archaeological and architectural evidence
The surviving mass does not show the complete original form: facing, decorative elements and the surrounding ritual setting have largely disappeared. Archaeological interpretation reconstructs its function from the core, finds and regional comparisons.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Its solitary profile is visually powerful, but it is a fragile archaeological structure rather than a viewpoint to climb. Read it alongside the nearby monastic evidence at Fayaz Tepe and Kara Tepe.
Why it matters
Visit Zurmala Stupa to understand a distinct layer of Termez and the wider Surkhandarya Region.
