The story
Historical context
Old Termez is not one monument but a broad archaeological landscape. Settlement developed beside an important Amu Darya crossing and accumulated fortified, religious, residential and funerary areas across many centuries.
Archaeological and architectural evidence
Excavations reveal Hellenistic and Kushan-period contexts, Buddhist monasteries and stupas, and later Islamic and medieval occupation. The visible remains belong to different phases and should not be read as a single intact city.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Fayaz Tepe, Kara Tepe and Zurmala retain independent pages because their functions and evidence differ. My Trip groups them as one practical archaeological excursion, while the Hakim al-Tirmidhi complex remains a distinct sacred stop.
Visiting responsibly
Much of the terrain is exposed and interpretation on site can be limited. Confirm current entrances and access, especially because parts of the wider landscape lie close to the international border.
Why it matters
Visit Old Termez to understand a distinct layer of Termez and the wider Surkhandarya Region.
