The story
Origins and historical context
Yerkurgan preserves a walled settlement associated with ancient Nakhshab and the historical development of the Qarshi oasis. Occupation and rebuilding extended across many centuries.
Architecture and evidence
Excavations identified fortifications, a citadel, monumental buildings, religious structures, craft quarters and burial remains. Interpretations and dates belong to an evolving archaeological record.
Change, conservation and interpretation
The site was damaged and transformed through conflict and abandonment; it is not a reconstructed monument park. Earthworks can be difficult to read without specialist context.
How to experience it
Plan it as a regional archaeological visit with confirmed transport and access rather than an informal walk from central Qarshi.
Why it matters
Visit Yerkurgan Archaeological Site to understand a distinct part of Shakhrisabz and the wider Kashkadarya Region.
