The story
Origins and historical context
Dorut Tilavat, commonly interpreted as the “House of Recitation,” grew around the memory of the Sufi teacher Shamsiddin Kulol and the burial of members of the Barlas elite. Its formation links Amir Timur’s family background with the religious life of Kesh.
Architecture and evidence
Change, conservation and interpretation
Its architecture spans several Timurid generations. Reading the complex building by building reveals how a sacred place accumulated dynastic, educational and communal roles rather than appearing in one moment.
How to experience it
Dorut Tilavat forms part of the inscribed Historic Centre of Shakhrisabz; its individual monuments are components of that property, not separate World Heritage Sites.
Why it matters
Visit Dorut Tilavat Complex to understand a distinct part of Shakhrisabz and the wider Kashkadarya Region.
