The story
Origins and context
Ulugh Beg commissioned this madrasa while governing the Timurid realm from Samarkand. Completed around 1420, it belonged to a wider educational programme associated with his court and his interest in mathematics and astronomy.
Architecture and meaning
The tall portal leads to a courtyard once ringed by student cells and teaching spaces. The star patterns on the façade are often linked to Ulugh Beg’s scientific interests, but they also belong to a broader Timurid ornamental vocabulary.
Later history and interpretation
The building changed through earthquakes, repairs and restoration. Its minarets and upper structures should therefore be read as a historic monument with a long conservation history, not as an untouched fifteenth-century survival.
