The story

Origins and context

Gur-e-Amir began within a complex connected to Muhammad Sultan, Timur’s grandson and designated heir, who died in 1403. After Timur died in 1405, he was buried here, and the site became a dynastic mausoleum.

Architecture and meaning

The visible cenotaphs mark burials beneath the floor. The chamber is associated with Timur, Muhammad Sultan, Shah Rukh, Ulugh Beg, Mir Sayyid Baraka and other members of the Timurid circle, though attribution details should be handled carefully.

Later history and interpretation

The ribbed turquoise dome, high drum and richly decorated interior made the mausoleum influential well beyond Samarkand. Restoration has renewed substantial surfaces, while the spatial hierarchy remains central to its impact.

What to notice

Notice how the surviving mausoleum relates to remnants of the larger ensemble, including the entrance and foundations of buildings that no longer stand complete.
