The story
Origins and context
The mausoleum was created in the 1370s for Shadi Mulk Aqa, a daughter of Timur’s sister Qutlugh Turkan Aqa. Inscriptions connect the building to named craftsmen and help establish its date.
Architecture and meaning
Its portal is a major example of carved glazed terracotta, with dense vegetal, geometric and epigraphic ornament. The scale is intimate, making close observation especially rewarding.
Later history and interpretation
Visit it as part of the Shah-i-Zinda route stop: the monument has its own history, but the practical visitor experience is inseparable from the necropolis corridor.
