The story
Origins and context
Namazgah mosques were associated with major communal prayers held outside dense urban quarters. Samarkand’s example preserves this urban and ritual type rather than the enclosed courtyard pattern of the great central mosques.
Architecture and meaning
The monument was rebuilt and altered over time. Its historical importance lies in function, orientation and open space as much as in surviving decoration.
Later history and interpretation
UNESCO treats the Namazgah Mosque as a separate component of the Samarkand serial property. Respect active religious use and current access arrangements.
