The story

Origins and context

Rukhabad is traditionally associated with Burhan al-Din Sagarji, a respected religious figure whose family had connections extending beyond Central Asia. The mausoleum is generally dated to the reign of Timur.

Architecture and meaning

Its plain brick mass and compact dome contrast with the more elaborate surfaces of Gur-e-Amir. That restraint is essential to the character of the monument, not evidence that decoration has simply been lost.

Later history and interpretation

Rukhabad and Gur-e-Amir form related but distinct monuments within the UNESCO historic city. Walk between them to understand the former ceremonial axis.
