The story
Origins and context
The shrine is associated locally with Daniyar, identified with the biblical Daniel. Several places across the Middle East and Central Asia claim relics or tombs of Daniel, so the Samarkand identification belongs to religious tradition rather than verifiable burial history.
Architecture and meaning
A popular story says Timur brought relics to Samarkand; versions differ in where they came from and what was transferred. The unusually long tomb is also explained through legend.
Later history and interpretation
Its setting beside the Siab stream and below Afrasiab gives the site a quiet landscape character. Treat the spring and tomb as living devotional spaces.
