The story
Origins and context
Ubayd Allah Ahrar, known as Khoja Ahrar, was a major Naqshbandi figure whose religious, economic and political influence extended across Timurid Central Asia. He died near Samarkand in 1490.
Architecture and meaning
The memorial ensemble grew around his burial place and includes structures from later periods. It is therefore a layered sacred complex, not a single building from Ahrar’s lifetime.
Later history and interpretation
The site remains connected to pilgrimage and religious memory. Dress respectfully and verify current visiting arrangements.
