The story
Origins and context
The site is associated with the prophet Khizr in local Islamic tradition and has long held a prominent position between Afrasiab and the later city. Earlier religious structures are reported here, though the standing mosque largely reflects nineteenth-century construction and subsequent restoration.
Architecture and meaning
Its columned veranda, painted ceiling and elevated terrace differ from the monumental Timurid ensembles below. The location also helps explain the topographic break between ancient Afrasiab and medieval Samarkand.
Later history and interpretation
The area includes the memorial burial of Uzbekistan’s first president, Islam Karimov. Respect current access rules and the religious character of the mosque.
