The story
Origins and context
The mausoleum formed part of a madrasa complex associated with Saray Mulk Khanum. It became a burial place for women of the Timurid family, although exact identifications and phases are not equally secure.
Architecture and meaning
Its tall chamber and restored decoration should be read separately from the mosque across the road. The two monuments are historically related but served different functions.
Later history and interpretation
Traffic and large paved spaces now separate the buildings; crossing carefully and looking back toward the mosque helps restore their visual relationship.
