The story

Origins and context

The museum stands beside the Afrasiab archaeological reserve and presents material recovered from ancient Samarkand. Its centrepiece is the cycle of seventh-century wall paintings discovered in a palace complex.

Architecture and meaning

The murals show processions, envoys and ceremonial scenes whose precise interpretation remains debated. They are invaluable evidence for Sogdian court culture and Samarkand’s international connections.

Later history and interpretation

Displays also connect ceramics, coins, inscriptions and everyday objects to the city’s long chronology. The museum and open site should be understood as one archaeological visit.
