The story

Origins and context

Abdi-Darun developed around a revered tomb outside the earliest core of the medieval city. The name “darun,” meaning “inside,” distinguishes it from Abdi-Birun farther beyond the former urban boundary.

Architecture and meaning

The ensemble contains structures from more than one period, including a mausoleum, mosque and courtyard elements. It is included with Ishrat-Khana in one component of the UNESCO serial property.

Later history and interpretation

This is less theatrical than the principal monuments and remains locally meaningful. Dress respectfully and avoid disrupting prayer or commemorative activity.
