The story

Origins and historical context

Tosh Darvoza forms the southern entrance through Itchan Kala’s walls. Its surviving form belongs largely to the nineteenth-century gate system.

Architecture and use

Compared with the western and eastern entrances, the southern approach often gives a clearer sense of wall mass, defensive passage and the meeting of inner and outer streets.

Later history and interpretation

It is a useful walking endpoint but should not be treated as a separate vehicle stop when already exploring the old town on foot.
