The story
Origins and historical context
Kunya Ark, the “old fortress,” was established in its surviving form in the late seventeenth century, traditionally linked to Arang Khan. It functioned as a royal city within the city, containing reception, administrative, religious and service spaces.
Architecture and use
The kurinish khana reception court, summer mosque, mint and Ak Sheikh Bobo bastion reveal different parts of court life. Much was lost or altered, so the surviving complex should not be imagined as the complete palace compound of one date.
Later history and interpretation
Tilework, carved columns and shaded iwans frame formal spaces, while the bastion offers a broader reading of Khiva’s walls and skyline. Treat the citadel as one substantial walking stop, not a list of separate car stops.
Why it matters
Visit Kunya Ark to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
