The story
Origins and historical context
Shergazi Khan commissioned the madrasa in the 1710s. A well-known tradition says captives used as builders killed the khan before completion; the story reflects the violence of the period but its details should be framed cautiously.
Architecture and use
The building stands near Pahlavan Mahmud and became known as a place of study connected with figures of the Turkmen literary world.
Later history and interpretation
Its lower position relative to the modern street and irregular details show how Khiva’s ground levels and buildings changed over time.
Why it matters
Visit Shergazi Khan Madrasa to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
