The story
Origins and historical context
Palvan Darvoza controlled Khiva’s eastern entrance and developed as part of the city’s busiest commercial zone. The passage and surrounding structures were shaped by nineteenth-century rebuilding.
Architecture and use
Caravanserai, market, madrasa and palace functions converge around the gate. It is best understood as part of a sequence rather than as a freestanding façade.
Later history and interpretation
Traffic and commerce can make the area busy; step aside before studying details or taking photographs.
Why it matters
Visit Palvan Darvoza to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
