The story
Origins and historical context
The Oq, or White, Mosque occupies a compact site near Palvan Darvoza. An earlier foundation is traditionally associated with the seventeenth century, while the surviving building is largely eighteenth- or early-nineteenth-century.
Architecture and use
A domed prayer hall and shaded iwan create an intimate counterpoint to the nearby palace and large madrasa portals. Carved wooden columns carry local ornamental details.
Later history and interpretation
Access depends on religious use. Observe quietly and avoid presenting uncertain foundation traditions as a precise surviving construction date.
Why it matters
Visit Oq Mosque to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
