The story
Origins and historical context
Nurullabay Palace was developed outside Itchan Kala in the early twentieth century, principally under Muhammad Rahim Khan II and Asfandiyar Khan. It belongs to the final decades of the khanate.
Architecture and use
Reception halls combine local carving and ornament with European materials, furnishings and decorative fashions. This hybridity records diplomatic and commercial connections rather than a simple abandonment of Khivan tradition.
Later history and interpretation
The palace is a genuine separate stop beyond the inner walls. Allow time for its sequence of courtyards and interiors and verify current room access locally.
Why it matters
Visit Nurullabay Palace to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
