The story
Origins and historical context
Dishan Kala is the outer town surrounding the walled inner city. A defensive wall with multiple gates was built in the nineteenth century, traditionally linked to Allakuli Khan, but much of it has disappeared.
Architecture and use
Surviving wall fragments, gates, houses and civic buildings show that historic Khiva extended far beyond the museum-like core. UNESCO documentation treats this wider setting as important to the conservation of Itchan Kala.
Later history and interpretation
This is a dispersed urban exploration, not one monument. Walk selectively or arrange transport between verified points without assuming every wall fragment is publicly accessible.
Why it matters
Visit Dishan Kala to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
