The story
Origins and historical context
Muhammad Amin Khan built this large madrasa in 1851–1855 as part of an ambitious transformation of the western entrance to Itchan Kala. Its scale and position were designed to project royal authority.
Architecture and use
The two-storey façade, portal and cells form a powerful pair with the unfinished Kalta Minor. The building has since been adapted for hospitality use, so access and the experience of historic interiors differ from that of a museum monument.
Later history and interpretation
Observe the urban composition from Ota Darvoza: gate, madrasa, minaret and Kunya Ark create one of Khiva’s most deliberate architectural sequences.
Why it matters
Visit Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
