The story
Origins and historical context
Built in 1908–1910, the madrasa formed part of Islam Khoja’s programme of public and educational works during the last decades of the khanate.
Architecture and use
Its modest courtyard and cells contrast with the exceptional vertical emphasis of the neighbouring minaret. Together they reinterpret Khiva’s traditional ensemble at the opening of the twentieth century.
Later history and interpretation
Museum use and access can change; verify the current exhibition locally while treating the madrasa and minaret as one walking section.
Why it matters
