The story
Origins and historical context
Allakuli Khan built the madrasa in 1834–1835 during a major expansion of Khiva’s eastern commercial quarter. It was inserted into an already dense area near the city gate.
Architecture and use
Its prominent portal and ceramic decoration face the routes connecting palace, market and caravan trade. The building belongs to an urban ensemble with the caravanserai and covered market rather than an isolated academic monument.
Later history and interpretation
Approach from both the palace side and Palvan Darvoza to see how architecture compresses and opens the street sequence.
Why it matters
Visit Allakuli Khan Madrasa to understand a distinct layer of Khiva and Khorezm beyond a checklist of façades.
