The story

Origins and historical context

Allakuli Khan commissioned the caravanserai in the 1830s as trade expanded beyond the crowded inner town. Its location beside Palvan Darvoza connected long-distance merchants with the city market.

Architecture and use

A covered market, or tim, was added to the commercial system. Domed passages moderated heat and organised shops, storage and circulation.

Later history and interpretation

Commercial uses continue to shape the experience. Notice the functional brick architecture and the transition from gate to market before focusing on individual stalls.
