The story
Historical context
Akshahan Kala, also known in research as Kazakly-yatkan, includes upper and lower fortified urban areas beside an ancient Amu Darya channel. Its scale and planning indicate a major political and ceremonial centre.
Archaeology and material evidence
Excavations by Karakalpak and international teams uncovered decorated architecture, including portrait and procession paintings and column bases. Interpretations of particular buildings and royal figures remain under study.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Much of the site is covered by sand, and it is not an ordinary prepared attraction. Access should be arranged with current archaeological or local guidance.
Why it matters
Visit Akshahan Kala to understand a distinct part of Karakalpakstan’s cultural or environmental landscape.
