The story
Historical context
Ayaz Kala is a complex of three distinct archaeological sites. Ayaz Kala 1 occupies the hilltop; Ayaz Kala 2 lies on a lower slope; Ayaz Kala 3 is a much larger enclosure on the plain.
Archaeology and material evidence
Their dates, functions and occupation histories differ. Defensive interpretation is important, but the complex also speaks to settlement, landscape control and changing political organisation.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Tourism shorthand often treats the group as one romantic desert castle. Visitors should instead notice the distance and topographic relationship between its components.
Visiting responsibly
Sand, heat, wind and eroding mud brick make this an exposed archaeological visit. Current vehicle access and walking conditions require confirmation.
Why it matters
Visit Ayaz Kala to understand a distinct part of Karakalpakstan’s cultural or environmental landscape.
