The story
Historical context
Kampyr Tepe preserves fortifications, streets, residential quarters and evidence of activity along a major river corridor. Excavation has documented a long and complex sequence that includes Hellenistic and later periods.
Archaeological and architectural evidence
The site is sometimes promoted as Alexandria on the Oxus, but ancient place-name identifications in the region remain disputed. Competing scholarly interpretations also concern Old Termez and sites beyond modern Uzbekistan; this guide does not present the Alexandria claim as fact.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Walls visible today include excavated and conserved remains. The broad site and river landscape matter more than any single reconstructed feature.
