Dalverzin Tepe was a substantial settlement in northern Bactria and is especially important for understanding urban life under the Kushans. Excavations revealed fortifications, elite and ordinary housing, craft areas and religious structures.
Archaeological and architectural evidence
Buddhist material is one strand within a broader city. Archaeologists also recovered coins, sculpture and the famous gold hoard, but major finds are held in museums rather than left in the ruins.
Interpretation and uncertainty
Excavated mud-brick architecture is vulnerable and can be hard to read. Avoid claims that every visible wall has one date or function.
