The story

A distinct archaeological city

UNESCO’s Tentative List identifies Ancient Pap and its adjoining urban burial ground as a major archaeological property on the right bank of the Syr Darya. It is not a spelling variant or component of Aksikent.

Long settlement sequence

The site preserves evidence from several periods of Fergana Valley history. Its urban area and cemetery together support research into settlement, belief and exchange rather than one simplified founding date.

Tentative List status

Ancient Pap appears on Uzbekistan’s UNESCO Tentative List. This is a proposal-stage inventory and must not be described as a World Heritage inscription.

A protected research landscape

Visible earthworks and burial areas are fragile. The published coordinate is a broad UNESCO reference point, not a confirmed visitor gate or promise of unrestricted entry.

02

Why it matters

It is the principal independently documented archaeological destination around Pap and closes a genuine western Namangan heritage gap.
