The story
Ancient and medieval city
Aksikent developed on the right bank of the Syr Darya and contains a citadel, shahristan and outer craft and residential areas. Its history spans ancient foundations and major medieval occupation rather than one single moment.
Trade and production
The city occupied a strategic position in northern Fergana. Archaeology and written sources point to markets, baths, religious buildings, workshops and notable crucible-steel production connected with regional and long-distance exchange.
Destruction and later memory
The pre-Mongol city suffered destruction in the early thirteenth century. Later settlement and Timurid-era associations, including links with Umar Sheikh Mirza and Babur’s family history, belong to subsequent layers. Accounts that reduce the whole site to one earthquake or one ruler oversimplify its chronology.
UNESCO status
Ahsiket has been on Uzbekistan’s World Heritage Tentative List since 2008 and also appears in the proposed Fergana–Syrdarya corridor. It is not currently an inscribed World Heritage Site.
Why it matters
Aksikent combines urban archaeology, craft production and Babur-era regional history in one of the valley’s most important ancient landscapes.

Practical notes
