The story
Historical context
Djanpyk Kala contains earlier occupation but much of the striking standing wall fabric belongs to medieval phases. It functioned as a settlement connected with the Amu Darya corridor.
Archaeology and material evidence
Finds, including imported goods and coins, point to exchange networks extending far beyond the lower Amu Darya. This evidence is more precise than simply calling the site a fortress.
Interpretation and uncertainty
The setting near rocky uplands differs from the open desert qalas farther east. Confirm local routes and access before travelling.
