The story
Historical context
Kalyan Mosque forms the western side of the Poi Kalyan ensemble. Its broad courtyard and repeated arches create a calm rhythm that contrasts with the minaret's dramatic height.
How to read the place
The present congregational mosque largely reflects the sixteenth-century rebuilding of Bukhara’s central religious precinct. Its scale is understood through the open courtyard, arcades and the direction established by the prayer hall.
Place in the city and route
Unlike a façade-only monument, the mosque is an ordered sequence of threshold, courtyard and covered prayer space. Repetition across the arcades makes proportion and movement part of the experience.
Before you visit
It remains a religious place, so access and visitor movement should follow current local guidance. Explore it together with the Kalyan Minaret and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa to understand the full Poi Kalyan ensemble.
Why it matters
The courtyard offers a clear sense of the scale and ceremonial role of historic Bukhara.
