Historical context
Poi Kalyan is the monumental heart of historic Bukhara. The ensemble brings together the Kalyan Minaret, Kalyan Mosque and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa around a broad public space whose scale becomes clear only when you stand inside it.
How to read the place
The minaret belongs to the earlier Karakhanid city, while the mosque and madrasa largely express the rebuilding and patronage of the sixteenth century. That layering matters: the square is not a single-date monument but a record of Bukhara repeatedly renewing its religious and civic centre.
