The story
A long archaeological record
Sarmishsay contains archaeological remains and extensive rock carvings from several periods. UNESCO’s 2024 Tentative List entry describes two principal petroglyph areas with a very large body of images.
Images in a landscape
Animals, hunting scenes, human figures and later inscriptions are not isolated museum objects. Their meaning depends on the gorge, movement routes and the surfaces chosen by people over time.
UNESCO status
Sarmishsay is on Uzbekistan’s World Heritage Tentative List. This is an official proposal for possible future nomination, not a World Heritage inscription.
Remote-site responsibility
Access, weather and site management can change. Plan with a knowledgeable local operator, remain on permitted paths and never touch, wet, trace or mark rock surfaces.
Why it matters
It is one of Central Asia’s most significant rock-art landscapes and a rare opportunity to read human activity across millennia in its original setting.
