The story
A geographic corridor
The gorge narrows the Sangzor route between mountain systems west of Jizzakh. Its value came from controlling movement between the Jizzakh oasis and the approaches to Samarkand.
Names need caution
Ilon O‘tdi, Temir Darvoza, Iron Gate and “Gates of Tamerlane” occur in modern and historical descriptions. The popular Tamerlane name does not mean that Timur constructed the natural gorge.
Historical inscriptions
Rock inscriptions record later political and military episodes associated with rulers and armies using the corridor. They belong to different periods and should not be merged into one legendary story.
A modern transport corridor
Road and railway infrastructure continue through the gorge. Visitors need a legal and safe stopping point; the coordinate identifies the landscape, not a guaranteed parking area or pedestrian entrance.
Why it matters
The pass makes the strategic geography between Jizzakh and Samarkand visible while allowing legend, later naming and documentary evidence to remain distinct.
