The story
Mountain landscape
Shohimardon lies in a mountainous exclave of Uzbekistan surrounded by Kyrgyz territory. River valleys, steep slopes and settlements create a landscape very different from the irrigated lowlands of the Fergana basin.
Cultural context
The area carries religious and local historical associations, some expressed through tradition rather than independently documented history. Such narratives should be identified as tradition and not used to prove uncertain events.
UNESCO status
Shokhimardon Mountains were added to Uzbekistan’s World Heritage Tentative List in 2024. Tentative status is not inscription and does not guarantee a particular visitor route or protected-site access.
Travel uncertainty
Because the exclave route crosses international territory, current border rules, documents, road access and transport conditions must be checked from official current sources before travel. This page makes no access promise.
Why it matters
It broadens the valley story beyond cities and crafts while making the exclave geography and travel uncertainty explicit.
