The story
A major oasis city
UNESCO’s Tentative List describes Kanka in Akkurgan District as a vast urban centre of the ancient Tashkent oasis. Its fortified territory contains successive inner enclosures, defensive works and a prominent citadel.
Chronology and interpretation
Archaeology documents occupation from antiquity into the medieval period. Identifications with ancient political names remain scholarly interpretations and should not be presented as universally settled fact.
Urban archaeology
Research has examined fortifications, religious structures, domestic areas and the city’s position between farming communities and steppe networks. The visible landscape is an archaeological site, not a reconstructed old town.
Tentative List status
Kanka is on Uzbekistan’s UNESCO Tentative List; it is not itself an inscribed World Heritage Site. Access, conservation zones and guiding should be confirmed before travel.
Why it matters
It closes the largest archaeological gap in Tashkent Region and balances a catalogue previously dominated by mountain recreation.
