The story
A long-lived settlement
Government tourism reporting identifies Eski Khavast as one of Syrdarya Region’s most significant archaeological sites, with origins in the fourth–third centuries BCE and occupation continuing through many later periods.
Fortified mound
The complex covers roughly ten to twelve hectares, with a central ark, substantial cultural deposits and surviving defensive earthworks. These dimensions describe the protected monument, not a fully excavated visitor park.
Water and route history
Archaeology records an engineered water channel and material from several periods. Khavast’s location helps explain movement between the Mirzachul steppe, Ustrushana and the Fergana approaches.
Evidence before legend
Nearby shrines preserve local sacred traditions, but this page centres the archaeological city. A precise public entrance marker is withheld until it is independently verified.
Why it matters
It is Syrdarya Region’s clearest destination-level archaeological site and gives the region historical depth beyond twentieth-century irrigation.
Highlights
- Hellenistic and medieval layers
- Fortified ark and walls
